Frequently Asked Questions
- Which taxes does this include?
- It combines 2025 federal income tax with provincial income tax for the province you choose. It does not include CPP or EI — use the Take-Home Pay (Paycheck) calculator to see those.
- How is Canadian income tax calculated?
- Both federal and provincial tax use progressive brackets — only the income within each band is taxed at that band’s rate. A basic personal amount is then applied as a non-refundable credit at the lowest rate, reducing your tax.
- What is the difference between average and marginal rate?
- Your marginal rate is the combined federal + provincial rate on your top dollar of income. Your average (effective) rate is total tax divided by total income, which is lower because of the progressive brackets and basic personal amounts.
- Are the Quebec figures exact?
- Quebec runs its own tax system. The estimate here is approximate and excludes the Quebec abatement and any surtaxes, so your actual Quebec result may differ.
- What is the basic personal amount?
- It is income you can earn before paying tax, delivered as a credit. For 2025 the federal basic personal amount is about $16,129, and each province has its own amount.
