Ideal Weight Formulas
Each formula starts from a base weight at 5 ft (60 in) and adds weight per inch above that:
| Formula | Men | Women |
|---|---|---|
| Devine (1974) | 50 kg + 2.3 kg/in over 5 ft | 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg/in over 5 ft |
| Robinson (1983) | 52 kg + 1.9 kg/in over 5 ft | 49 kg + 1.7 kg/in over 5 ft |
| Miller (1983) | 56.2 kg + 1.41 kg/in over 5 ft | 53.1 kg + 1.36 kg/in over 5 ft |
The healthy weight range uses BMI: weight = 18.5–24.9 × height(m)².
These are general references and do not account for muscle mass, frame size or body composition. For personalised targets, speak to a healthcare professional.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What is ideal body weight?
- Ideal body weight (IBW) is a reference weight for a given height and sex, originally developed for medication dosing. Several formulas exist, so this tool shows the Devine, Robinson and Miller results side by side, in both stones/pounds and kilogrammes.
- Which ideal weight formula is best?
- There is no single best formula. Devine is the most widely used in medicine; Robinson and Miller give slightly different values. A healthy weight is best viewed as a range rather than one exact number.
- How is the healthy weight range calculated?
- It uses a BMI of 18.5–24.9 multiplied by your height in metres squared. At 5′10″ (1.78 m) the healthy range is roughly 58–79 kg, or about 9 st 2 lb to 12 st 6 lb.
- Do these formulas account for muscle or frame size?
- No. They are based only on height and sex, so very muscular or large-framed people may weigh more while still being healthy. Consider your body fat percentage and waist measurement as well.
- Why do the formulas only use height above 5 feet?
- Devine, Robinson and Miller all start from a base weight at 5 feet (60 inches) and add a set amount per inch above that, which is why height is the main driver of the result.
