UK Overtime Pay Calculator
Work out regular pay, overtime pay and total weekly pay using your own overtime rate.
UK law sets no statutory overtime premium — your overtime rate is whatever your employment contract states (commonly 1.5×, sometimes 2× for Sundays or bank holidays). Average pay must not fall below the National Minimum/Living Wage.
How to calculate overtime pay in the UK
Enter your hourly rate, the total hours you worked this week, your standard (contracted) hours and your overtime multiplier. The calculator splits your hours into standard and overtime, applies your multiplier to the overtime hours, and shows your total weekly pay.
Formula
- Regular pay = hourly rate × standard hours.
- Overtime pay = hourly rate × multiplier × hours over the standard week.
- Total weekly pay = regular pay + overtime pay.
UK employers are not legally required to pay an overtime premium, but your average pay must not fall below the National Minimum/Living Wage. Check your contract for your agreed overtime rate.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Is there a statutory overtime rate in the UK?
- No. UK law does not require employers to pay extra for overtime. Any premium — such as time-and-a-half (1.5×) or double time (2×) — is set by your employment contract, so this calculator lets you enter your own multiplier.
- How is overtime pay calculated?
- Regular pay = hourly rate × standard hours. Overtime pay = hourly rate × your multiplier × the hours above your standard week. Total weekly pay is the two added together.
- Does overtime have to be paid at all?
- Employers must pay at least the National Minimum or National Living Wage on average across your hours, but they can pay overtime at your normal rate unless your contract promises more. Check your contract for the agreed overtime rate.
- What multiplier should I use?
- Use whatever your contract specifies. Common rates are 1.5× for weekday overtime and 2× for Sundays or bank holidays, but it varies by employer. The default here is 1.5×.
