GPA Calculator
Enter letter grades and credit hours to find your weighted and unweighted GPA.
| Course | Grade | Credits | Type | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Unweighted GPA uses the standard 4.0 scale (A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3 …). Weighted GPA adds +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP/IB courses. Scales vary by school — check your school's policy.
How GPA Works
Your grade point average (GPA) summarizes your grades into a single number. Each letter grade converts to grade points on the 4.0 scale, each course is multiplied by its credit hours, and the sum is divided by the total credit hours.
4.0 Grade Scale
| Letter | Points |
|---|---|
| A / A+ | 4.0 |
| A− | 3.7 |
| B+ / B / B− | 3.3 / 3.0 / 2.7 |
| C+ / C / C− | 2.3 / 2.0 / 1.7 |
| D+ / D / D− | 1.3 / 1.0 / 0.7 |
| F | 0.0 |
Weighted GPA
Weighted GPA rewards more challenging coursework by adding bonus points: typically +0.5 for Honors classes and +1.0 for AP or IB classes. Because of this bonus, a weighted GPA can rise above 4.0.

Frequently Asked Questions
- How is GPA calculated?
- GPA = Σ(grade points × credit hours) ÷ Σ(credit hours). Each letter grade maps to points on the 4.0 scale, each course is weighted by its credit hours, and the totals are divided.
- What is the 4.0 grade scale?
- A standard US scale is A/A+ = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B− = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C− = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D− = 0.7, F = 0.0.
- What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
- Unweighted GPA uses the plain 4.0 scale regardless of course difficulty. Weighted GPA adds extra points for harder classes — commonly +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP or IB courses — so it can exceed 4.0.
- Do scales vary between schools?
- Yes. Some schools count A+ as 4.0 and others as 4.3, and weighting policies differ. Use this as an estimate and check your school’s official policy for the exact method.
