Frequently Asked Questions

What is ideal body weight?
Ideal body weight (IBW) is a reference weight for a given height and sex, originally developed for medication dosing. Several formulas exist, so this tool shows the Devine, Robinson and Miller results side by side.
Which ideal weight formula is best?
There is no single best formula. Devine is the most widely used in medicine, Robinson and Miller tend to give slightly different values. A healthy weight is best viewed as a range rather than one exact number.
How is the healthy weight range calculated?
It uses a BMI of 18.5–24.9 multiplied by your height in metres squared. For example, at 5′10″ (1.78 m) the healthy range is roughly 129–173 lb (58–79 kg).
Do these formulas account for muscle or frame size?
No. They are based only on height and sex, so very muscular or large-framed people may weigh more while still being healthy. Consider body fat percentage and waist size as well.
Why do the formulas only use height above 5 feet?
Devine, Robinson and Miller all start from a base weight at 5 feet (60 inches) and add a set amount per inch above that, which is why height is the main driver of the result.
