BMI Calculator
Find your Body Mass Index and healthy weight range from your height and weight.
Categories follow the WHO standard. Several Indian and other Asian guidelines use lower cut-offs — overweight from a BMI of 23 and obese from 25 — because health risks appear at a lower BMI. Treat both as guidance, not strict limits.
BMI Formula & Categories
Body Mass Index (BMI) = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². This calculator accepts kilograms and centimetres, or pounds with feet and inches.
BMI Categories for Adults (WHO)
| BMI Range | Category |
|---|---|
| Below 18.5 | Underweight |
| 18.5 – 24.9 | Healthy weight |
| 25.0 – 29.9 | Overweight |
| 30.0 and above | Obese |
Asian-Indian BMI Cut-offs
Indians and other South Asians tend to carry more body fat and face higher cardio-metabolic risk at a lower BMI, so several Indian guidelines lower the thresholds:
| BMI Range | Asian-Indian Category |
|---|---|
| Below 18.0 | Underweight |
| 18.0 – 22.9 | Normal |
| 23.0 – 24.9 | Overweight (at risk) |
| 25.0 and above | Obese |
The gauge above uses the WHO categories. BMI does not distinguish muscle from fat and is not suitable for athletes or pregnant women. Results are for reference only — speak to your doctor about any health concerns.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What is a healthy BMI?
- Using the standard WHO ranges, a BMI of 18.5–24.9 is a healthy weight, below 18.5 is underweight, 25–29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is obese.
- How is BMI calculated?
- BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². For example, 68 kg at 1.70 m gives a BMI of about 23.5. The calculator converts pounds, feet and inches for you when you use imperial units.
- Do Indians have different BMI cut-offs?
- Yes. Many Indian and Asian guidelines use lower thresholds because health risks such as diabetes appear at a lower BMI: overweight from a BMI of 23 and obese from 25. We show the WHO categories on the gauge, but you should treat 23 and above as a point to take care.
- Is BMI accurate?
- BMI does not distinguish muscle from fat, so it can be misleading for athletes, pregnant women and older adults. Use it as a general screening tool and also consider your waist measurement and body-fat percentage.
- What is my healthy weight range?
- A healthy weight is a BMI of 18.5–24.9 multiplied by your height (m)². At 1.70 m that is roughly 53–72 kg, or about 118–158 lb.
