How mileage is calculated

  • Mileage (kmpl) = km driven ÷ litres used (higher is better) — India's standard measure.
  • L/100km = 100 ÷ kmpl (lower is better).
  • Total fuel cost = litres used × price per litre (₹).
  • Cost per km = total fuel cost ÷ km driven.

Petrol and diesel in India are priced per litre and rates differ by state. For the most accurate reading, measure the kilometres and litres between two brim-full fill-ups. Smooth driving, correct tyre pressure and less idling all improve mileage.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate mileage in kmpl?
Mileage (km/L) = kilometres driven ÷ litres of fuel used. For example, 500 km on 40 litres gives 500 ÷ 40 = 12.5 kmpl. A higher number means better mileage.
What is a good mileage for a car in India?
It varies by vehicle. Small petrol hatchbacks often return 18–22 kmpl, diesel cars a little more, and SUVs less. Bikes can give 40–60 kmpl. Use your actual figures for an accurate reading.
How do I convert kmpl to L/100km?
L/100km = 100 ÷ kmpl. So 12.5 kmpl = 100 ÷ 12.5 = 8.0 L/100km. Lower L/100km means better efficiency.
How is total fuel cost worked out?
Total fuel cost = litres used × price per litre. Cost per km = total fuel cost ÷ kilometres driven, which is handy for budgeting a trip.
How do I measure mileage accurately?
Fill the tank full, reset the trip meter, drive normally, then fill up again. Note the litres added and the trip distance — that gives a real tank-to-tank mileage.
