How your electricity bill is worked out
- Energy charge = units consumed × price per unit (₹).
- Slab rates apply different prices to successive blocks of units (telescopic billing).
- Fixed charge is a flat monthly amount, often based on sanctioned load.
- Total = energy charge + fixed charge.
- Average price = total ÷ units consumed (includes the fixed charge).
Tariffs and slabs vary widely by state and DISCOM (such as BESCOM, MSEDCL, TNEB, BSES). Many bills also add electricity duty and other levies on top. Enter the figures from your latest bill for an accurate estimate. Everything is calculated locally in your browser.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How is an electricity bill calculated in India?
- Bill = (units consumed × price per unit) + fixed charge. One "unit" is one kilowatt-hour (kWh). Most state DISCOMs use slab (telescopic) tariffs, where successive blocks of units are billed at higher rates. This calculator supports both flat and slab rates.
- What are slab (telescopic) rates?
- Slab tariffs charge a lower rate for the first block of units and higher rates for usage above each threshold. For example, the first 100 units at one rate, the next 200 at a higher rate, and everything above at the top rate.
- What is the fixed charge?
- Most DISCOMs add a fixed (or service) charge each month, often based on your sanctioned load in kW. It applies even if you use very little electricity. Enter the amount from your bill.
- What is one unit of electricity?
- One unit equals one kilowatt-hour (kWh) — the energy used by a 1,000-watt appliance running for one hour. Your meter records consumption in units.
- How do I find my units consumed?
- Take a meter reading at the start and end of the month and subtract, or read the units total directly from your latest bill or smart meter.
